The parish, with its minister and kirk session, administered to the moral and intellectual needs of the Highlanders. It functioned as a local government, and until 1855, kept the vital statistics of births, deaths and marriages. It was key to the immediate reaction to such crises as the 1848 Famine. The poor, lunatic, and the helpless were all the concern of the parish. These duties were financed by contributions from local landowners or 'heritors.'
