SOUMING AND SOWING OF THE ESTATE OF KNAP

(preparative to new Sett of the Lands commencing from Whit 1778). Page 2 - 7

The Sets granted from Whitsunday 1775 by the Factor appointed by the Court of Session having been only for the space of Three years, the following proof of the Souming and Sowing of the Estate was taken as preparative to a new Sett of the Lands, commencing from Whitsunday 1778.
At Slockavulline, the Sixteenth day of March, 1778:

(NEIL MACINTYRE, IN KILMORY KNAP)

In presence of NEIL CAMPBELL, ESQUIRE OF DUNTROON, one of His Majesty’s Justices of the Peace for the Shire of Argyll, Compeared NEIL MACINTYRE, TENANT IN KILMORY, aged Sixty years or thereby, married, who being solemnly sworth and Interrogate

Depones that he was born upon the Estate of Knap and has lived thereon ever since;

That the Souming of the farm of Stronefield, exclusive of the pendicle thereof called Ardnafren is Sixty four great Cows with their followers of Stirks and Calves; and
Sixteen two-year olds
Eighty aged Sheep with their Year Olds and lambs, and
besides the Kain Wedders payable to the proprietor,
Eight work horses, and four mares with their Two year olds and Foals

That prior to the Woods upon the said Estate being cut down in the lifetime of the LATE PATRICK CAMPBELL OF KNAP, the Tenants of this Farm were in use to keep a considerable flock of Goats upon it besides the above Souming.

That the souming of the pendicle of Ardnafrain, when joined to Stronfield, was Sixteen treat Cows, their Stirks and Calves, and two two-year olds

Depones that the Souming of the farm of Ballimore (exclusive of the point thereof annexed to Fernoch) is
Thirty- six great Cows with their Stirks and Calves and Sixteen two-year olds,
Sixty-four Sheep with their Ewes and Lambs
(Exclusive of the kain wedders payable to the proprietor)
Eight horses and four mares with their two-year olds and foals

That the sowing of the said Farm at an average is Seven bolls and a half of Beer and Forty six bolls of great Oats.

That the souming of the Cott House Acres is
Two Cows with their Stirks and Calves and one two-year old
Five sheep with their followers
besides the kain payable to the Proprietor

The sowing thereof, if entirely in tillage is One boll and two pecks of Oats.

That the souming of the Miln of said Farm is
Seven great cows with their stirks and Calves and two two-year olds
Five Sheep with their Ewes and Lambs
Besides the kain Wedder payable to the proprietor

Depones that the Souming of the Farm of Fernoch (Exclusive of the point of Ballimore and pendicle of Ardnafren) was anciently
Twenty great Cows with their Stirks and Calves and eight two-year Olds,
Eight horses
Thirty Sheep with their Ewes and Lambes

That the Souming of the Point of Ballimore is Twenty Cows with their Stirks and Calves but that it has no arable land.

Depones that the Souming of the Farm of Kilmory (exclusive of the pasturage following the Cott house) is
Thirty six Cows with their Stirks and Calves and Twelve two-year olds.
Eight horses and Four Mares with their Two-year Olds and foals;
Sixty Sheep with their Ewes and Lambs,
Besides the kain Wedders payable to the proprietor.

That the Sowing thereof is Seven Bolls Beer and Thirty two bolls great Oats.

That the Souming of the Cott House thereof is
Four cows with their Stirks and Calves and two two-years olds ,
Eight Sheep with their Ewes and Lambs,
Besides the kain Wedder payable to the proprietor

Depones that the Soumings of the Lands of Ardnaw is the same with the Souming of the Lands of Kilmory, exclusive of the Souming of the Cott house thereof;

That the Sowing of Ardnaw is Ten bolls of Beer and forty eight bolls of Great Oats

Depones that the Souming of the Farm of Achinduine or Doid, anciently a pendicle of Ardnaw, is
Twenty four Cows with their Stirks and Calves and Eight two-year olds,
Eight horses
Thirty two sheep with their Ewes and Lambs,
Besides the kain Wedders payable to the proprietor

That the Sowing thereof is Five bolls and a half of beer and twenty three bolls Great Oats.

And this is the truth as he shall answer to God and declares he cannot write.

Compeared AULAY GALBREATH, TENANT IN KILMORY, aged Fifty three years or thereby, married, who being solemnly sworn and Interrogate

Depones that he has lived all his lifetime past upon the Estate of Knap
and with respect to the Souming and Sowing of the Lands of Stronefield, Ballimore, Cott house and Miln; Fernoch, Ardnafrain, point of Ballimore, the lands of Kilmory and Cott house, and lands of Ardnaw and Achinduine

Depones conform to the immediate preceeding deponent in omnibus with the addition that The Sowing of the Farm of Fernoch, exclusive of the pendicle of Ardnafrain is five bolls of bear and Twenty four bolls of great Oats

Depones that he has lives for most of his Lifetime past as a tenant upon the Estate of Knap;

That the Sowing of the farm of Stronefield is Three bolls and half bear and twenty five bolls Great Oats

That the sowing of the pendicle of Ardnafrain, if the arable grounds thereof were entirely in Tillage, is Six pecks of bear and Four bolls Great Oats

That the Sowing of the Farm of Stronefield is four and a half bolls bear and twenty eight bolls Great Oats;

That the Sowing of the Miln Acre, if entirely in tillage, is three pecks of beer and three bolls great Oats.
